3 Must Know Marks To Make Your Shoes

To make your shoes, obviously you must learn the craft, and there are many important shoemaking marks  that will help you a lot in shoe pattern making.

But there are 3 most important shoemaking marks that will guide you to make your own shoes the right way.

You should know them, especially, if you are a beginner in shoemaking.

So, let’s dive in.

The first important shoemaking mark that will help you to make your shoes professionally is

The mark of the inner side

Inner-side-mark

Every shoe last has two parts: the outer side and the inner side. These two sides have different shapes and as a result, almost in every shoe type, the pattern of the outer side is different than the pattern of the inner side of the same shoe design.

So when you will mark the inner side of all parts of your upper pattern and lining pattern, when you’ll make your shoes, it will help you IN:

You made the pattern of your shoes working on one of the shoe lasts, left or right, and the pattern will be left or right. To cut the second half of your pair you should turn over all patterns. Only according to the inner mark in all your parts you will know which part belongs to each pair of shoes: left or right.

Because you will have many different upper parts and lining parts you should know where are the parts of the inner side and where are the parts of the outer side.

So to make your shoes correctly you should distinguish between them and assemble all the right and left halves together.

After you will finish assembling and sewing you will have left half and right half of your shoes ready for lasting.

So, for you to make your shoes correctly, you should place the sewn upper of both halves in the right way: left halve on the left shoe last and the right halve on the right shoe last.

You will know what is the right half and what is the left half according to the inner shoemaking mark.

Super simple but very useful, right?

Second important shoemaking mark is the mark of the center in the toe area of all your shoe patterns.

Center-Toe-mark

This mark will help you in the process of lasting of your shoes.

To make beautiful shoes it is very important to place the sewn upper of your shoes on the last correctly, so you will not have a crooked footwear.

During lasting you should place it in the way where the centerline of the upper matches the center of the shoe last.

To know exactly how to do it, the center mark of the toe area and the center mark on the top of the upper will guide you on how to put the upper on the center of the shoe last.

When you are sure that the center mark of the toe matches the center of the last’s toe, and the center mark on the top of the upper lays on the center of the top side of the shoe last, you can move on in the lasting process.

The center mark on the top of the upper is your third important shoemaking mark that will help you a lot to make shoes professionally.
